If you are new to Australia, employers and recruiters are likely to reject you because they cannot see your local work experience.
Recruiters and employers aren’t familiar with the organisations you have worked for or the kind of work you have done. Due to this lack of visibility, it is likely they will move on to the next application or that they will assess your application based on what they think they know about your country/previous roles i.e. they will make an assumption.
You want to avoid this by making it easy for employers to understand your resume. The first thing to do is to provide some context on your resume. A good starting point is your name. Consider using one name and surname e.g John Smith instead of John James Smith de la Renta. You can also include a professional overview of your experience including detail around the type of role you are seeking, the number of years of experience you have and your key skills.
Secondly, get some local work experience through volunteering programs, internships or short-term contracts. This will not only help you to validate your experience locally but also build a professional network within Australia and get some referrals.
And lastly don’t give up. Unemployment rates in Australia are one of the lowest in the world. With this in mind, you have a great chance in securing both a job in your field of study and something that you enjoy doing.
